E- cigarettes have always been promoted as safer alternatives to traditional smoking which delivers nicotine by burning tobacco but a new study suggests vaping is no safer
than smoking as e-cigarette vapor was found to damage human cells.
Electronic cigarettes (also called e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems) are battery-operated devices designed to deliver nicotine with flavorings and other chemicals to users in vapor instead of smoke.
Some researchers from Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System performed the experiment by deriving an extract from the vapor of two popular e-cigarette brands which they used to treat human cells in a Petri dish and compared it with an untreated set of cells.
The result? Treated cells exhibited an increased likelihood of DNA damage and death.
Nicotine may not be the only substance present in the vapour that is causing cell damage. At present, the team is trying to
identify other substances found in e-cigarette vapor that contribute to cell damage.
The study published in the journal Oncology.
