Alcohol And Energy Drink: A Dangerous Combination

Energy drinks and alcohol are a wildly dangerous combination.

Alcohol is a depressant which means it slows down the brain’s functions and can act as a sedative. When you drink a lot of it, your words might slur and your reflexes become slower.

Energy drinks on the other hand have a stimulating effect because of their high caffeine content, thereby making you feel more alert.

When alcohol which is a depressant, is mixed with a stimulant such as caffeine, it causes a much more dramatic intoxication that experts have started to call the “wide awake drunk.”

The high doses of caffeine contained in energy drinks mask your body’s natural ways of letting you know you’ve consumed too much alcohol, therefore, people tend to drink way more than they should.

This can lead to over intoxication and risk for alcohol poisoning.

(Now a simple illustration: if you were  drinking just your favorite brand of beer, you'd probably take 2 bottles and stop. But when you decide to mix with a caffeine-rich energy drink which is meant to keep you alert, you can very easily do beyond 4 bottles.

This is because Mr energy drink keeps you alert and awake when your reflexes should have since been slowed down by just alcohol.

And it is bad news because now you got deceived into thinking you were doing just fine when the real fact is you've become very intoxicated with much more alcohol in your system than you can handle).

When you combine a lot of the two (alcohol and energy drink), you can drink more alcohol, you are more likely to take risks, are more likely to experience increased physical and psychological side effects, such as heart palpitations, experience problems sleeping.

This combination will also cause you to consume large amounts of caffeine, which can cause anxiety and panic attacks.

You also consume a lot of calories and sugar with this combination that can make you put on weight, which adds to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes which you face when you drink alcohol on its own.

Your chances of developing short and long-
term health problems are also increased.
