- Use of Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): NSAIDs are drugs that have analgesic and anti inflammatory actions. For example aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, piroxicam etc.
- Persistent Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection.
- Over secretion of gastric acid.
- Other infectious diseases, such as herpes simplex, Cytomegalovirus infection, syphilis, and tuberculosis.
- Undiagnosed and persistent H pylori infection and
- Careless NSAID use
The use of antibiotics, or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs- ulcer healing drugs) suppresses the H pylori bacterial load and may mask the diagnosis of an active H pylori infection in the stomach.
If you have a stomach ulcer or have been treated of an ulcer, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before going for over-the-counter analgesics to be sure you're taking the right one.
There are also some diseases that mimic peptic ulcers. So, if after treating, your symptoms are still there, do not repeat the drugs without going back to your doctor.
