Although the technique is not approved in the US, Dr John Zhang a reproductive endocrinologist was able to perform the controversial procedure in Mexico.
The fertility treatment is meant to help people who carry genes for rare diseases conceive.
In this case, the mother who has had four miscarriages and lost two children is a carrier for a rare disease, Leigh syndrome and although she is healthy, her DNA holds a gene that is later passed on to her children.
The technique involved doctors removing the nucleus from one of the mother's eggs and inserting it into a donor egg that has had its own nucleus removed.
This egg which now contained DNA from the Jordanian mother, along with mitochondrial DNA from the female egg donor was then fertilized using the father's sperm.
