Sometimes STD symptoms are mild. Sometimes they can be mistaken for other conditions, other times STDs don't have symptoms at all. Yet they can cause health problems.
Even with no symptoms, you can pass the infection to your sex partners.
You should get yourself tested for STD if:
- you have unsafe sex (sex without condoms or that exposes you to your partner's blood, semen or vaginal fluids).
- you have more than one sex partner.
- you have a new sex partner
- you're a man who has sex with other men.
Thinking or hoping your partner doesn't have an STI is no protection — you need to know for sure and so it is essential to be evaluated, and if diagnosed with an STI, get treated.
It is also essential to inform your partner or partners so that they can be evaluated and treated.
Some common symptoms of STD's include:
- Pain or burning sensation when urinating
- Discharge from the penis in men
- Strong vaginal odour in women
- Pain during sexual intercourse in women
- Painful, swollen testicles in men
- Anal itching
- Thick, greenish or yellow discharge from the vagina
- Heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding between periods
