What Your Feet Say About Your Health

The state of your feet can give important  clues to your overall health. Health conditions like diabetes, nutrient deficiencies can be detected just by examining the feet.

Some signs your feet may give you are:
1. Spoon shaped toe nails : A concave or spoon like shaped toe is often indicative of anaemia or iron deficiency.

Other signs of anaemia are fatigue,  shortness of breath, headache and dizziness when standing.

2. Numbness in both feet:  A heavy pins-and-needles sensation in your feet is a hallmark of damage to the peripheral nervous system.

The top two causes of peripheral neuropathy are diabetes and alcohol abuse.

3. Cold feet: Feet that is always cold is suggestive of
- circulation issues when enough blood does not get to your feet to keep them warm.
- hypothyroidism, when the thyroid gland doesn't make enough of the hormone that helps keep many of the body’s systems running smoothly.
- nerve damage as a result of an injury, diabetes or other underlying medical condition.

4. Lines or black spots under your toe nails: If you notice discoloration under a toenail and don’t remember injuring your toe, you might want to talk to your doctor.

Dark, vertical lines under a toenail could be a sign of a hidden melanoma. A melanoma is a type of skin cancer.

Toenail discoloration could also be caused by a fungal infection and though less severe still should not be ignored.

5. Hairless or balding toes: If you notice that your toes are losing a little bit of hair, or if they’ve gone completely bald, it could be a sign of poor blood flow. One cause of insufficient blood supply to the feet and toes is peripheral arterial disease, or PAD for short.

6. Frequent foot cramping: Foot cramps which happen often is indicative of a diet lacking sufficient calcium, magnesium or potassium.
