Ways To Soothe A Sore Throat

Allergies, colds, the flu, bacterial infection: could all cause a sore throat. Whatever the cause, a sore throat can give one so much discomfort.

Sore throat from a cold often gets better or goes away after the first day or two. Other cold symptoms such as a runny nose and congestion may follow the sore throat.

Sore throat caused by a bacterial infection also known as strep throat is often more severe and requires treatment with an antibiotic.

A hallmark symptom of strep throat is a red, raw-looking throat with swollen tonsils that often have visible white spots (pus pockets). Dark red splotches or spots on the areas around the tonsils or the top of the mouth are also indicative of strep throat.

But if your throat is sore from cold, here are some remedies to help you feel better:

  • Gargle frequently with warm salt water to help reduce swelling. It’s also known to help kill bacteria in the throat.
  • Use an over-the-counter, pain reliever. They'll make you feel better and also reduce some of the swelling associated with a sore throat.
  • Eat smooth, soothing foods like gelatin, ice cream, shakes, frozen desserts, and soup.
  • Use lozenges and sprays. For added benefit, choose brands with a cooling or numbing ingredient, like menthol or eucalyptus.
  • Drink lots of fluid. Staying hydrated is very important, especially when you're sick and your throat is irritated or inflamed.
  • Avoid crunchy or spicy foods.
  • Take honey mixed in tea or simply taken straight up. It is a common household remedy for a sore throat.
