Asides smoking and poor oral hygiene, there are some other causes of bad breath that may come as a surprise.
1. Dehydration:
Saliva has bacteria-fighting properties.
So, if you’re dehydrated, your saliva levels go down. This reduces your mouth’s ability to fight odor-causing germs.
If you notice that you suddenly have bad breath for no reason, try drinking more water regularly. That may clear it up.
2. Mouth Breathing:
Breathing through the mouth dries out the mouth.
This reduces saliva production, increases bacteria growth, and of course lead to bad breath.
3. Coffee:
Want to keep your breath smelling sweet? Then reduce your coffee intake.
Coffee is dehydrating and can dry out the mouth. Without enough saliva in the mouth, bad odour results.
4. Too much protein:
One downside of high-protein diets is bad breath.
If the body is starved of carbohydrates and depends mainly on protein for most of its energy, the liver may not be able to handle the high level of ammonia which is a by-product from the breakdown of protein.
And this gives off a strong fishy smell in both the breath and sweat.
5. Tonsil Stones:
Tonsil stone is a collection of food debris and bacteria at the crevice of your tonsil tissue.
When this hardens, it smells really bad. Most of the time, lifestyle changes and good oral hygiene will get rid of tonsil stones.
